Background
Ms. Gilliland began studying ballet at Minnesota Dance Theater in Minneapolis.  Ms Gilliland attended summer courses at the School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet, in 2002 and 2003, before attending full-time in the fall of 2003. In July 2005, she became an apprentice with NYCB.  Ms. Gilliland became a member of the corps de ballet in June 2006.
