Max van der Sterre was born in San Francisco, California, and began his dance training at the age of seven.  Mr. van der Sterre studied at the City Ballet School with Damara Bennett and Henry Berg before studying at the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, during the 2002 and 2003 summer course, enrolling as a full time student in the fall of 2003. 

In June 2005, Mr. van der Sterre became an apprentice with NYCB, and the following June he joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet.
