Born in France in 1956, five days after his parents left Albania, Angelin Preljocaj studied both classical and modern dance. He attended the Merce Cunningham School in 1980 and later toured France with Dominique Bagouet. In 1984 he founded the avant garde "Compagnie Angelin Preljocaj" which toured Europe for several years. In Japan he worked with a Noh theater; he has choreographed films and has won several awards for these works. His dances explore movement with a distinctly original sensibility. Between 1987 and 1997, he choreographed a number of ballets, including Noces, Romeo et Juliette, Hommages aux Ballets Russes, and Le Parc-Itineraire Du Desir. This is his first work for New York City Ballet.
