It isn’t possible to think of a ballet without seeing the costumes in your mind. Whether they are simple or sumptuous, costumes help to set the mood and express the choreographer’s ideas. What the dancers wear can make them look beautiful or scary, funny or sad, young or old. Costume design can take us back in history or into the future. A change of costume can turn a ballerina into a fairy princess, a snowflake, a violin, a mechanical doll or a magical bird.

Many great designers have created the brilliant costumes that can be seen in New York City Ballet’s large repertory of ballets. We invite you to use your imagination in these pages to see how you would make the costumes look if you were the costume designer for these wonderful ballets.
