Periodically the New York Choreographic Institute hosts a symposium dedicated to a choreographer who has had a profound impact on the world of dance. In 2001, a lecture on August Bournonville was presented by the reknowned Danish dance historian and critic Eric Aschengreen and a panel composed of Peter Martins and Nikolaj Hübbe. In 2002, John Roland Wiley presented aspects of the work of Marius Petipa as seen through a music scholar’s perspective. In 2003, Clive Barnes, noted writer and critic, led the panel discussion on Frederick Ashton. George Balanchine was the subject of the Spring 2004 symposium, as the world celebrated the centennial of the choreographer's birth. The panel, led by Richard Tanner, included Barbara Horgan, Peter Martins, Francia Russell & Kent Stowell, and Violette Verdy.

Forums are attended by an invited audience of dance scholars, critics, dancers, students, choreographers, musicians and other interested parties. After the formal portion of the presentation, the audience has an opportunity to engage the panel in a question-and-answer session.
