FRANK ANDERSEN

Frank Andersen was appointed Artistic Director of the Royal Danish Ballet in the summer of 2002, a position he had held previously from 1985 to 1994. Trained at the Ballet School of the Royal Theatre, he also studied with Vera Valkova, Stanley Williams, and Nora Kiss. Mr. Andersen joined the Royal Danish Ballet in 1971 and was promoted to the rank of principal dancer in 1977. In 1976, he founded the Bournonville Group with other principals of the Royal Danish Ballet and toured throughout Asia, Europe, and North America. He has also directed several productions of August Bournonville’s ballets, including Napoli for the Monte Carlo Ballet in 1988, the Royal Danish Ballet in 1992, and the American Ballet Theatre Studio Company in 2001, and La Sylphide for the Inoue Ballet, the National Ballet of China, and the Royal Swedish Ballet, all in 1999. Mr. Andersen was Director of the Bournonville Summer Academy from 1985 to 1992 and Artistic Director of the Royal Swedish Ballet from 1995 to 1999. A winner of several cultural prizes, he has served as a board member for numerous institutions, such as the Danish American National Cultural Exchange, Minister of Cultural Affairs Niels Mathiesen’s Memorial Foundation, Neel Resling Halpern Fonden, and New Danish Dance Theatre.
