Background:Tom Gold was born in Lockport, Illinois, and began his dance training at age 11 with Larry Long and Warren Conover. He came to the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, for a summer session in 1986 and was invited to join the New York City Ballet's corps de ballet the following year. In February 1993, Mr. Gold was promoted to the rank of soloist.
Since joining New York City Ballet, Mr. Gold has danced featured roles in: George Balanchine's: Bourrée Fantasque, Chaconne, The Four Temperaments, George Balanchine's The Nutcracker™ (Candy Cane and Soldier), Harlequinade, Ivesiana, A Midsummer Night's Dream (Oberon and Puck), Mozartiana, Orpheus, La Sonnambula, Stars and Stripes, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, Symphony in Three Movements, Tarantella, Union Jack, Valse-Fantaisie, Variations pour une Porte et un Soupir, Vienna Waltzes, Western Symphony; William Forsythe's: Behind The China Dogs, Herman Schmerman; Peter Martins': Ash, Fearful Symmetries, Jazz (Six Syncopated Movements), The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake (Jester); and Jerome Robbins': The Concert, Fancy Free, The Four Seasons, Interplay, Ives, Songs, Piano Pieces, and West Side Story Suite.
Mr. Gold originated roles in: Mr. Martins' Slonimsky's Earbox, Kevin O'Day's Swerve Poems, Angelin Preljocaj's La Stravaganza, Susan Stroman's "Makin' Whoopee!" (Jimmie Shannon) from Double Feature and "Blossom Got Kissed" from Duke!, Richard Tanner's Episodes and Sarcasms, Lynne Taylor-Corbett's Chiaroscuro.
Other Performances: Mr. Gold toured with Tharp! and Donald Byrd the Group, and he appeared as a guest artist in New York City Opera's production of Carmina Burana.
Film Credits: Mr. Gold danced the "Candy Cane" variation in the film version of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker™, produced by Elektra Entertainment/New Regency Films, distributed by Warner Brothers and released in the winter of 1993. He is featured in the video The Balanchine Essays with Merrill Ashley and Suki Schorer, which was released by Nonesuch in 1995.
Additional Information: In addition, Mr. Gold appeared in the Emmy-nominated Live from Lincoln Center broadcast of the Peter Martins/Ray Charles collaboration, A Fool For You, and in the 2002 nationally televised Live from Lincoln Center broadcast of "New York City Ballet's Diamond Project: Ten Years of New Choreography" on PBS, dancing in Chiaroscuro and La Stravaganza.
