ADAM HOUGLAND
Originally from Dallas, Texas, Adam Hougland is a freelance choreographer who divides his time between New York City and Bristol, England. He began his dance training at the age of 14 at the Dallas Conservatory of Ballet and the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. He also studied visual arts and acting from an early age. Mr. Hougland graduated from the Juilliard School with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance in 1999. While at Juilliard, he performed in works by Paul Taylor, Lar Lubovitch, Jose Limón, and Jiri Kylian and premiered his own original ballet, Beyond, which garnered Mr. Hougland the Hector Zaraspe Prize for Outstanding Choreography during his final year at the School.
After graduating from Juilliard, Mr. Hougland joined the Toronto Dance Theater in 1999 and the Limón Dance Company in 2000. During this time, he also collaborated with composer Justine Fang Chen to create Stand 9, which was featured in Juilliard's Emerging Masters of American Choreography. In 2001, while continuing to perform with the Limón Dance Company, Mr. Hougland re-staged Beyond for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal. In 2002, he retired as a dancer with the Limón Dance Company but stayed on to choreograph Phantasy Quintet, a work which earned him both the Choo-San Goh Award for Choreography and a New York State Council for the Arts Commissioning Grant. During this time, Mr. Hougland also created Between Ashes and Angels for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal; Living Proof for Introdans in The Netherlands; a re-staging of Beyond for Cincinnati Ballet, and a re-staging of Stand 9 for Chamber Dance Project.
In 2003, Mr. Hougland premiered Intarsia at Juilliard and created All You Have for Chamber Dance Project; Bitter Suite for Introdans, and Cold Virtues for Louisville Ballet, for which he also re-staged Beyond. In addition, he participated in Ballet Pacifica's Pacific Choreographic Workshop In 2004 he premiered Fledgelings for Cedar Lake Ensemble, and participated in the New York Choreographic Institute. He also returned to performing and danced in Lar Lubovich's Pentimento and Men's Stories. He re-staged Beyond for Introdans and began work on Devolve for Louisville Ballet. In 2005 Mr. Hougland was named Principal Choreographer for the Louisville Ballet wherehe will create new works for the company every year through the 2006-2007 season.
Up and coming projects include new works for Washington Ballet, the Limón Dance Company, as well as a creation for Juilliard's 100th anniversary celebration to a commissioned score by Christopher Rouse.
Mr. Hougland has taught at the Bahia Blanca Conservatory of Dance in Argentina, The New York State Summer School for the Arts, Interlochen Arts Academy, and the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, where he is a guest faculty member and has choreographed four works for the School's Repertory Ensemble.
