Amy Seiwert

Amy Seiwert, originally from Cincinnati, was a principal dancer with the Sacramento Ballet before moving to San Francisco and joining Smuin Ballet.  In 1998 Robert Weiss invited her to create a work for Carolina Ballet's inaugural season.  The following year, she was invited by Molly Lynch to participate in Ballet Pacifica's Choreography Workshop and also won the Festival des Art de Saint-Sauveur Choreography Competition in Quebec.  She returned as Artist-in-Residence the following year.  Graham Lustig, artistic director of American Repertory Ballet, invited her to be part of his "Dancing through the Ceiling" program, which showcases the work of female choreographers.  The result was Monopoly, created in 2001 to a Gorecki string quartet, which later had its West Coast premiere by Oakland Ballet. Using musical choices as diverse as Bach, Evelyn Glennie, Mozart and Morton Feldman, Ms. Seiwert strives to break habitual reactions in her work.  An active choreographer with work in the repertory of Smuin Ballet, Robert Moses KIN, Sacramento and American Repertory Ballets, she also directs the San Francisco-based contemporary ballet company im-ij-re.  Named one of "25 to Watch" by Dance Magazine in 2005, she has received grants from the Gerbode Foundation, The Zellerbach Family Fund, and Theater Bay Area.
