MANUEL SOSA

Manuel Sosa was first trained in his native Caracas, Venezuela, where he studied at the José Angel Lamas National Conservatory. In the United States, he studied at The Juilliard School, where he completed Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral degrees in music composition. His teachers have included Stephen Albert, Robert Beaser, Joseph Castaldo, David Diamond, Jacob Druckman, and Jacques-Louis Monod. He has also studied Harmony with Mary A. Cox; counterpoint, analysis, and conducting with Jacques-Louis Monod; and Afro-Cuban percussion with Jerry González. He has written vocal, solo and chamber works, as well as music for film, plays, and jazz ensembles. His works have been performed in North and South America, Europe, and Japan, by renowned ensembles and performers. He was the executive secretary of the Guild of Composers, Inc. (1994-2000), and the founder and music director of the Quadrantis Ensemble (2004-). He was awarded the C.V. Starr fellowship for doctoral studies at Juilliard (1997-1998). He has also received fellowships from Meet the Composer/Van Lier Foundation (2002), and the artists’ colony Yaddo (2003 & 2004). He has had works commissioned by Trio Nobis (France), D.C. Dance Theater, the New Juilliard Ensemble, and by several individuals. He teaches composition and solfège in the Pre-College Division of Juilliard.
