George Balanchine said, “Choreography can only be the result of music.” That statement sums up New York City Ballet’s approach to the creation of repertory. Everything starts with the music.
Many highlights of the NYCB repertory have resulted from the special collaborations of Balanchine and Stravinsky, Robbins and Bernstein, and Martins with a number of contemporary American composers including John Adams, Wynton Marsalis, Michael Torke, and Charles Wuorinen. Scores by 20th century Hungarian composer György Ligeti have provided abundant inspiration for NYCB Resident Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon.
Throughout its history, NYCB has commissioned as many new compositions as most symphony orchestras. The Discography identifies the various available interpretations of the musical compositions that are the basis of our repertory. When ballet scores are compilations of different works, those individual works that are available will be indicated. When no recording exists that information is provided.
