The Art in Teaching initiative encompasses two new programs that introduce the ways dance can help achieve learning standards and curricular goals while stimulating students’ problem-solving, communication, reflective, and collaborative skills. The New York City Board of Education new teacher credit is offered for both programs listed below. No dance experience is necessary for participants.
Program I: Dance–Literacy through an Aesthetic Education
A one-day intensive workshop for public school groups in or near New York City.
Open to teachers of grades K-12, administrators, paraprofessionals, guidance counselors, single-discipline educators, and parents, this program introduces participants to the literacy of dance and its intrinsic relevance to literacy in other subject areas. The workshop involves movement, discussion, writing, and curriculum design exercises to illustrate how literacy across disciplines can be achieved.
Program II: Ballet–Curriculum through Aesthetic Exploration
A 15-session series for individual professionals from New York City public schools.
This program examines the craft and aesthetic of ballet, as exemplified by NYCB, to provide teacher and student with opportunities for literacy enrichment and curricular development. Each session will explore various aesthetic approaches and New York City and State Learning Standards and apply them to school and classroom curricula. Participants will attend Company rehearsals and performances and interact with numerous NYCB artists. At the end of the series, all participants, under the guidance of NYCB educators, will draft and present proposals for units of study that integrate dance.
