First comes the sweat. Then comes the beauty — if you’re very lucky and you’ve said your prayers. – George Balanchine
When our Co-Founder said that the sweat leads to the beauty, he was speaking to a common truth. The sheer physical effort of ballet remains in the background because the eyes take in the aesthetic pleasure first. Transcendence, a moment that feels profound, can be a matter of luck meeting preparation, of magic snapping into focus after the practice. Sometimes these connections can be fleeting, but these performances give you the opportunity to see it all. Beauty, made visible. Because of luck, prayers, and most of all — the sweat.
With evocative narratives, abundant Balanchine and Robbins favorites, and the latest contemporary choreography, 2018/19 offers an astonishing array of dance. Among the highlights are six world premieres, including two from NYCB Resident Choreographer Justin Peck; a second offering from Gianna Reisen, who in Fall 2017 became the Company’s youngest choreographer ever; and works from three dance-makers new to NYCB: Kyle Abraham, Matthew Neenan, and Emma Portner. Three full-length works also return, the multi-faceted Jewels in fall, the Company’s grand production of The Sleeping Beauty around Valentine’s Day, and the verdant springtime classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream to close the season in spring.
