Dance is wedded to story and character in this trio of classics. Jerome Robbins’ buoyant Fancy Free, set to music by Leonard Bernstein, depicts the romantic adventures of sailors on leave. Robbins and Bernstein reunited to create the classic Broadway musical West Side Story, which Robbins later distilled into a dance suite in 1995. And Balanchine’s Prodigal Son, featuring designs by the painter Georges Rouault, tells the Biblical parable through explosively expressive movement.
