A thoroughly original take on the narrative story ballet, George Balanchine’s Prodigal Son retells the eponymous parable from the Bible with modernist music, decor, and choreography, translating an ancient tale into a timeless work. The narrative of a rebellious youth, his wayward journey and surrender to worldly temptation, and return to his father’s forgiving arms is communicated through stunning acrobatics and dramatically expressive movements.
