EFFERVESCENT CHARM, GROUNDBREAKING NEOCLASSICISM, AND A ONE-OF-A-KIND COMEDY
Three strikingly different ballets from the company’s co-founding choreographers demonstrate the breadth of their creators’ expressive modes. The evening commences with La Source, Balanchine’s bubbling “pink champagne” ballet, in the words of original lead Violette Verdy, set to the charming music of favorite composer Léo Delibes, followed by The Four Temperaments, the choreographer’s spiky, Black & White interpretation of the eponymous Paul Hindemith composition. Jerome Robbins’ comedic tour de force The Concert, with music by his own preferred composer, Frédéric Chopin, concludes the program, and brings caricatures of concertgoers to life on a stage shared with the pianist.
