A CHOREOGRAPHIC TRIPTYCH EMBODYING THE SCOPE OF NYCB’S BOUNDARY-PUSHING INNOVATION
The artistic and expressive range of the company’s repertory comes to the forefront with this electric program. Jerome Robbins’ Moves from 1959 markedly broke with ballet tradition by renouncing a score altogether, with the incidental noises of the dancers’ movements providing the only sound, indicating the focus of the work: bodies in motion, and dance in its purity. Mauro Bigonzetti’s Oltremare, which translates to “beyond the sea,” portrays the passions and peregrinations of working-class immigrants, with earthy costumes and accompaniment by the accordion-like fisarmonica. The evening launches with the latest work from Canadian choreographer Alysa Pires, her second commission for the company, which premiered in the fall.
