THREE BALANCHINE MASTERPIECES HIGHLIGHT TWO BELOVED COMPOSERS
Music by two of Balanchine’s favorite composers inspires the plotless works of this varied program. The athleticism and neoclassical invention of Agon, representing the pinnacle of the choreographer’s collaboration with Stravinsky, is bookended by two ballets set to Tschaikovsky. The first, Mozartiana, premiered in 1981 and movingly combines the youthful energy of its score—and a cast that includes four School of American Ballet students—with the wisdom and gravitas of its original lead, Suzanne Farrell. The evening finishes with Tschaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2, originally choreographed in 1941 with the title Ballet Imperial, an indication of its grand, classical scope.
