Balanchine’s affection and refined facility for glamour find their ultimate articulation in this evening-length tour of his musical affinities. Often interpreted as representations of French, American, and Russian dance idioms, respectively, each act strikes a unique tone: the luxurious poetry of Emeralds, the cool and snappy command of Rubies, and the regal sophistication of Diamonds, each reflected in evocative gemstone-hued costumes designed by Barbara Karinska.
