The spring’s ample variety of contemporary works continues with this quartet of ballets. For his taut, high-energy Hallelujah Junction Peter Martins returned to a favorite composer, John Adams, and his score for two pianos that gives the ballet its title. William Forsythe’s Herman Schmerman, staged for the first time in its entirety after more than 20 years, joins Alexei Ratmansky's acclaimed Concerto DSCH and Matthew Neenan’s first dance for the Company, from Fall 2018.

Location:
David H. Koch Theater
Running Time:
2 hrs. 18 min.

21ST CENURY CHOREOGRAPHERS II

  • The Exchange (New Neenan)

    • Music by: Antonín Dvořák
    • Choreography by: Matthew Neenan

Set to an impassioned score for string quartet, Matthew Neenan’s first work for NYCB crafts a world of abstract beauty, enhanced by striking scarlet and black costumes from Gareth Pugh that help develop a narrative of connection and antagonism as tribe-like groupings parry back and forth.

  • Hallelujah Junction

    • Music by: John Adams
    • Choreography by: Peter Martins

Martins’ Hallelujah Junction is a living locomotive of propulsive vitality, set to a pulsing John Adams score played by two onstage pianists.

  • Judah (New Reisen)

    • Music by: John Adams
    • Choreography by: Gianna Reisen

Returning with her second offering for NYCB, Gianna Reisen employs dissonant music for violin and piano to illuminate themes of both community and independence, her choreography highlighted by gestural movements, geometric patterns, and romantic costumes from fashion designer Alberta Ferretti that evoke flowers, waves, and Grecian goddesses.

  • Concerto DSCH

    • Music by: Dmitri Shostakovich
    • Choreography by: Alexei Ratmansky

With its thrilling Shostakovich score and dramatic texture, Ratmansky’s acclaimed 2008 creation excels with classical ingenuity and contemporary stylishness.
