Balanchine once said, “There are no new steps, only new combinations,” and this annual program invokes that precept by uniting ballets from three of today’s most acclaimed dance-makers and a choreographic legend. Christopher Wheeldon’s Polyphonia, a classic of contemporary ballet, is presented here with Justin Peck’s airy ensemble piece Bright, Jerome Robbins’ masterful Opus 19/The Dreamer, and an Alexei Ratmansky world premiere set to a score by experimental composer Peter Ablinger.

Program runtime subject to change.

NEW COMBINATIONS

  • Polyphonia

    • Music by: Gy├Ârgy Ligeti
    • Choreography by: Christopher Wheeldon

Regarded as one of Wheeldon’s breakthrough contemporary works, Polyphonia’s four couples wind their way through ten eerily melodious Ligeti selections, including music made famous by Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut.

  • Bright

    • Music by: Mark Dancigers
    • Choreography by: Justin Peck

Justin Peck's Bright, his 18th ballet for NYCB, is set to Mark Dancigers' The Bright Motion: II as orchestrated by the composer. The ballet for six dancers features costumes by Reid Bartelme and Harriet Jung, and lighting by Brandon Stirling Baker.

  • Opus 19/The Dreamer

    • Music by: Sergei Prokofiev
    • Choreography by: Jerome Robbins

Originally choreographed in 1979 for Mikhail Baryshnikov and Patricia McBride, Jerome Robbins’ Opus 19/The Dreamer focuses on the male protagonist’s elusive interactions with his ethereal counterpart. The ballet for 14 dancers is set to Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major, which premiered in 1923 and has become one of the most beloved works for violin in the classical repertory.

  • New Ratmansky

    • Choreography by: Alexei Ratmansky

His first piece for NYCB since 2017’s Odessa, American Ballet Theatre Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky will contribute a new work to winter’s New Combinations program.
