Albert Evans’ plotless pas de deux to Mathew Fuerst’s contemporary, yet tonal quartet uses a demanding, distinctive and unpredictable dance vocabulary. He responded to the lyrical qualities within the music creating a range of moods using inventive, athletic steps, partnering, and lifts. Evans also includes floor work that has its roots in modern dance. Dramatic lighting by Mark Stanley strengthens the moodiness and mystery of the entrances and exits. Broken Promise is Evans’ second ballet for New York City Ballet, and contrasts with the percussive, angular qualities of his earlier work, Haiku, to chamber pieces by John Cage.
