A frothy classical wonder, the French-themed La Source combines thrilling ensemble work with virtuoso pas de deux.
La Source was the first ballet music that Delibes composed. The ballet was originally choreographed by Saint-Léon and premiered at the Paris Opera in 1866.
In 1968, Balanchine used excerpts from the score to create a pas de deux for Violette Verdy and John Prinz. The following year, Balanchine expanded the ballet to include sections originally choreographed for his Pas de Deux and Divertissement (1965), and the cast grew to include a female soloist and eight corps de ballet dancers.
