Set to a score by Michael Torke, Martins' contortionistic choreography employs off-balance shifts of weight and languorous movements to create a coolly sensuous pas de deux.
The central movement from Peter Martins’ Ecstatic Orange, Purple is pas de deux that was added to Ecstatic Orange six months after the ballet premiered. The music for Purple was commissioned by New York City Ballet from the acclaimed American composer Michael Torke, who also composed the other two movements of the work – "Verdant Music" (for the "Green" section of the ballet), and "Ecstatic Orange", the finale of the complete ballet.
