Accompanied by a uniquely saxophone-centered contemporary classical score by Jack Frerer, Alysa Pires’ Standard Deviation features individuals who boldly break away—in solos, pas de deux, and small groups—from the prescribed patterns, geometric sequences, and angular mechanics of a collective body.
Alysa Pires’ Standard Deviation is the Canadian choreographer’s first work for NYCB. Featuring costumes by Canadian designer Dana Osborne and lighting by NYCB Resident Lighting Director Mark Stanley, the ballet for 15 dancers is set to a NYCB commissioned score by Australian composer Jack Frerer. Pires and Frerer first began collaborating on Standard Deviation in a working session at the New York Choreographic Institute, an affiliate of NYCB, in 2019.
