Tālā Gaisma

Tālā Gaisma (Distant Light) features three ballerinas partnered by one male dancer in a series of entwined pas deux, pas de trois, and solos. The choreography illustrates the sporadic pizzicatos and cadenzas with tension, lyricism, and "aleatoric" chaos (elements of chance in the choice of tones, rests, duration, rhythms, and dynamics) of the music. Each ballerina’s style reflects a different characteristic of the string section: gentleness and vulnerability, speed and energy, and strength of attack and technical virtuosity. Unique promenades and arabesques intersperse with images reminiscent of Apollo and the Muses as well as Orpheus and the Furies. The ballet calls for an expressive solo for the male lead and tests his partnering skills as he deals with the different moods and strengths of each ballerina. The role was created for Principal Dancer Jock Soto in his final season with NYCB although injuries prevented his appearance in its premiere.
