Conjuring feelings of wistful longing, six dancers provide a continually changing landscape as a lone outsider moves poetically among them.
Set to two movements from Maurice Ravel’s piano score Miroirs, "Oiseaux tristes" and "Une Barque sur l’Océan," Robert Binet’s The Blue of Distance is the choreographer’s first work for NYCB.
The costumes for the ballet, which premiered at NYCB’s Fall 2015 gala, were designed by Japanese-born, New York-based designer Hanako Maeda of ADEAM. The lighting was designed by Mark Stanley. Binet, the Choreographic Associate at the National Ballet of Canada, created The Blue of Distance for three couples and a male soloist.
