Tschaikovsky Pas de Quatre

The Tschaikovsky Pas de Quatre is a sparkling divertissement for three ballerinas and a danseur. The music includes some rarely heard excerpts from the score Tschaikovsky wrote for the premiere of Swan Lake in Moscow in 1877, an unsuccessful production that had disastrous choreography by Julius Reisinger. This production was such a failure that the entire ballet was not seen again for eighteen years, until Petipa's familiar version premiered in St. Petersburg in 1895, after the composer's death.
 
Mr. Martins' choreography requires exceptional virtuosity with each solo and subsequent pairings highlighting the dancers' complete mastery of classical technique. The musical selections chosen by Mr. Martins include a waltz and a solo for Siegfried from Act I, a Russian dance and the Pas des Fiancées from the Act III Ballroom scene, and a Hungarian duet from Act IV.
