Set to a score of recorded speeches by notable women overlaid with accompanying solo piano, Ratmansky’s sixth creation for New York City Ballet features character-rich and technically demanding solos for five women, joined by five men who perform interstitial dances before the entire cast unites in a final ensemble movement.
Alexei Ratmansky’s Voices, his sixth ballet for NYCB, is set to six pieces from Austrian composer Peter Ablinger’s Voices and Piano, featuring the voices of Bonnie Barnett, Forough Farrokhzad, Setsuko Hara, Agnes Martin, Nina Simone, and Gjendine Slålien. With sets and costumes by Keso Dekker and lighting by Mark Stanley, the work is for 10 dancers.
