Peter Martins' first ballet, a series of solos and duets for two dancers that is set to eight short pieces by Ives, is an edgy, contemporary work full of propulsive movement.
Calcium Light Night was Martins' first choreographic work for NYCB, which he created in 1977 while still a principal dancer with the Company. Set to eight short selections by composer Charles Ives, the work was first presented in Spokane, Washington before its New York premiere in 1978.
