Set to a score by Michael Torke, Martins' contortionistic choreography employs off-balance shifts of weight and languorous movements to create a coolly sensuous pas de deux.
Martins'first collaboration with Torke, Ecstatic Orange, is a three-part plotless work using three pairs of soloists. The heart of the piece is a sensuous pas de deux titled Purple, in which unique uses of off-balance weight and form cut across the slow movement in languorously controlled, convoluted images. Ecstatic Orange is the first of numerous collaborations between Martins and Torke, which aslo include Black and White (1988), Echo (1989), and Ash (1991).
