Designed to promote literacy and artistic expression, The Nutcracker Project uses the elements and themes of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™ as vehicles of study. Students take part in five interdisciplinary in-school workshops and attend a live performance of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™. NYCB Teaching Artists and participating teachers engage students in dance, poetry and visual art workshops. Lessons focus on the themes of the ballet and the students’ reflections on the ways in which these themes relates to their lives. The program culminates in the publication of The Nutcracker Project Anthology, which showcases selected poetry and visual art created by students and teachers during the residency.
“I was able to see a different side of some of my students that I never saw before. The dancing brought that out.”
- Participating teacher from PS 16Q
“The Nutcracker Project has given me the opportunity to work with a beautifully diverse range of students from every borough of the city. What continues to amaze me is how universal the themes of ballet are and how readily they inspire students to create their own dances, artwork, and poems.”
