The Nutcracker Project

Oct–Dec 2014
Program: five in-school workshops, teacher professional development session, NYCB student matinee performance
Grade levels: 3rd and 4th grade
Cost: $350 per class

The Nutcracker Project is designed to promote individual and group artistic expression inspired by themes, choreography, and music from George Balanchine's The Nutcracker™. NYCB Teaching Artists and classroom teachers engage students in interdisciplinary workshops and lessons, and all participants attend a live performance at Lincoln Center. The newly-revised curriculum focuses on active art making, collaboration, and critical reflection through poetry and creative movement.

The Nutcracker Project residency was an unbelievable experience for myself and my students. It gave them the opportunity to use their creativity, motor skills, and abstract thinking skills to get up, have fun, and move around. - 3rd grade teacher, Brooklyn

The Nutcracker Project has given me the opportunity to work with a beautifully diverse range of students from every borough of the city. What continues to amaze me is how universal the themes of ballet are and how readily they inspire students to create their own dances, artwork, and poems. - NYCB Teaching Artist
