Herman Schmerman

Choreography by: William Forsythe

Music by: Thom Willems (commissioned for The Diamond Project)

Forsythe’s angular, contemporary choreography, paired with an electronic score by his long-time collaborator Thom Willems, is on full display in the first complete staging of this ballet in over two decades.

William Forsythe choreographed Herman Schmerman as part of the 1992 Diamond Project. This ballet is the second work New York City Ballet has commissioned from Forsythe, as is the electronic score from composer Thom Willems. The costumes were designed by Gianni Versace. In 1993, Forsythe added a pas de deux to the ballet, and since 1994, NYCB has only performed the pas de deux. The 2019 Winter Season marked the return of the full ballet.
