Mercurial Manoeuvres accents the wit in Shostakovich’s concerto, pairing dramatic movements with the peaks and valleys of the composer’s dynamic music.

Dmitri Shostakovich’s Concerto in C minor for Piano, Trumpet, and String Orchestra, Op. 35, was completed in 1933 and premiered the same year with the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. The piece is a true piano concerto in which the trumpet commands equal prominence, and frequently provides sardonic interjections, leavening the humor and wit of the piano passages.

The ballet, a witty and cheerful piece for 21 dancers, was created by Christopher Wheeldon for the 2000 Diamond Project festival of new choreography, and was the last work Wheeldon created for NYCB while he was still dancing with the Company. Following the 2000 spring season Wheeldon retired from dancing to focus on choreography full time.
